What is PAT testing?
PAT testing, also known as 'Portable appliance testing', is an essential aspect of a company?s Health and Safety Policy to ensure that staff are not harmed by any electrical equipment within the business premises. PAT testing should be performed regularly to protect employees, customers and you against any accidents and liability within the workplace.
Why is PAT testing carried out?
PAT testing must be undertaken in order for companies to fully comply with the Electricity at Work Regulations. Testing is required because during every day use, electrical appliance can become worn or damaged.
PAT testing is a legal requirement under the following legislation;
- The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HSW or HASAW)
- The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 ( MHSW)
- The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, the workplace (Health, safety and welfare) Regulations 1992 (EAWR)
- The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1992 & 1998 (PUWER)
Stages of PAT testing;
Simple Observation - We look at any portable appliance the customer will be using and make known any electrical safety issues we may believe it has.
Formal Visual Inspection ? We visually inspect the portable appliance and look for obvious defects such as frayed wires, cracked cables and broken plugs.
Combined Inspections and PAT testing ? Finally we use a PAT testing instrument which will electrically test the item for any electrical faults and automatically record the results.
After the electrical safety testing has been carried out we provide a certificate for each item tested. The certificates are professionally displayed in a folder for you to keep.
Guidance from the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) suggest intervals for inspection and testing, ranging from 3 months (for construction equipment) to 4 years (computers in offices).
UES&S Ltd have over 20 years of electrical and electronic experience.
